We understand a millions dollar business, but this is a million dollar question,
Can you create a business that helps the world and earns you money? Is this really possible or just a figment of our imagination?
Being a Christian entrepreneur I have great ideas that roam my mind all the time. I have ideas that can innovate the church, close the gap on poverty and more. The question that I’m always faced with from third party counsel is, “Janay, how will this make you money?” Of course, I desire to earn money and I know God desires for His children to have money and be prosperous (with more than enough to do all that He has called us to do, check out II Corinthians 9:8-9, Ephesians 1:3, Deuteronomy 28:8), but I am always conflicted with the clash of ministry and business, non-profit and enterprise….so I asked my Father, is it possible to have both within a business model?
I was led by Holy Spirit to visit my local library and my eyes were laid on this one book in particular by Nobel peace Price winner Muhammad Yunus, entitled, A World of Three Zeros and author of Banker To The Poor. He is the creator and founder of Grameen Bank an organization that offers business loans to women entrepreneurs without the need of credit, collateral and other things that conventional banks require, which eliminate the poor and minority female business owner. He begins the discussion of a broken economical system (capitalism) which only benefits the wealthy and increases wealth concentration. His solution, a social business model where you can create a revenue based, self sustaining business that can help humanity as well as earn revenue.
So many entrepreneurs, Christians included, are solely in business to make money or get fame, for their own personal needs, gains and ego. Again, making money is not evil (despite what you may have been taught in Sunday School). What is evil is the demonic, selfish ambition behind the reason why you want to make money. If you forsake God’s vision to please your needs first, then you are no longer being “pushed” by Holy Spirit, but Hell’s Spirit. Matthew 6:33- but seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. What are the “these things”? Read Matthew 6:31-32 to see what God will add to you if you seek His vision.
This book is inspiring and offer alternative thinking to how people in America view economics and business. Muhammed Yunus uses his economic brilliance, genuine motive and passion, to paint a picture, of how businesses can change the world and profit.
